#100DaysofScouting Day 3: Wood Badge

This weekend is another Staff Development day for the Cascade Pacific Council‘s Spring Wood Badge course. W1-492-11. Working on my presentations that I need to give to my Patrol. As I am working through these presentations, I am able to reflect back to when I went through this course and other Corporate trainings. Through my company, I am a Yellow Belt in Lean Six Sigma. The next two levels are Green and Black. For those within the Corporate world and or know of LSS, it’s an interesting process. If you are a Black Belt, your respondsibilities and duties at work greatly increased as hopefully your take home pay. Both are very desirable and respected in both worlds.

So, what is the difference?

I have seen both Woodbadge and Lean Six Sigma projects and people at work. Both have desired outcomes. However, one is a lot more fun. Can you guess?

Lean Six Sigma in how I have seen it work is very dry and exacting. It’s a tool to find imperfections and extract a solution to correct it. In Woodbadge, it’s to find your values that are at your core beliefs, fully realize them and apply them to how to improve yourself, your unit, your life and others.

LSS in my opinion is used by policy wonks & spreadsheet jockeys to streamline production, people that will increase productivity and profits. It can also be used to reduce headcount. Woodbadge is used to enhance the Scouting program and experince of Scouts and Scouters. It also can be used to help your day job and family life. My ticket was all about Education and bringing FUN to my Pack.

So, why all this on Day 3. Going back through the program as a Staffer is helping me realize at a deeper level what Woodbadge is trying to do.

For those who are confirming payments and reservations to Woodbadge….GOOD! You will get more friends, more fun and more tools to better yourself. It’s NOT DEATH BY POWERPOINT!

I’ve got the Greenbelt covered at work… I’m now waiting for the right time to attend Wood Badge. One of these days — maybe in the fall. All depends on the work schedule.
